The Arboretum State Botanical Garden of Kentucky

rvtramm75

Our adventure of the day was the Arboretum located near the University of Kentucky. Like all arboretums, there are beautiful flowers, shrubs, and landscapes. We looked for the different things.

Let's start with the walls. Kentucky is the only place I have ever seen walls like this. They are called "dry stone walls" because there is no motor to keep the stones together. The technique was brought from Ireland and Scotland. In Kentucky, they are made of the area limestone. The top layer, stacked at an angle, is called the coping.

They are also found in New England, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Some sculpture presents a clear picture while some require imagination. We at first thought this was antlers. However, closer inspection found they were birds. The piece was in honor of those who were lost in a plane crash at a local airport.

A field of milkweed.

A chestnut.

A weeping juniper. If you ever watched the Addams Family, this shrub reminds me of Cousin It.
