We went through Sturgeon Bay many times going up to northern Door County. Plus, negotiating Sturgeon Bay was much easier than Green Bay.
Like many towns, Sturgeon Bay has a decorated item around its town indicative of the area. Theirs are called "bass around the bay." Here are a few plus a cherry.
With the easy access to Lake Michigan from Green Bay, a shipyard in Sturgeon Bay makes sense. Fincantieri Shipbuilding, an Italian company, has a manufacturing and renovation facility in Sturgeon Bay. There are tours of the yard once a year and we missed them. We did see three of the bulk freighters like those we saw at Marquette under renovation. Also, there were two "casino boats" formerly owned by the Trump Group under renovation.
There is a canal connecting Lake Michigan and Green Bay and some of the boats coming through are sailboats and larger ships. There are three bridges across this canal in Sturgeon Bay, all are draw bridges to allow taller ships to pass. After a loud horn and a bell, the bridge will open, allowing the "tall" ship to pass.
This was an interesting working boat and a guy riding a jet board.
We took a walk around Sturgeon Bay and on our walk, we noticed a 1958 Corvette parked in a garage. Luckily, the owner was doing yardwork and welcomed us into the garage for a look. He told us the story of the car's original owner, a local doctor, who passed away and his widow allowed the car to sit in a garage for years. After finding the widow, who had remarried, he was finally able to buy the car. It has had a frame-off restoration and yearly complete look-over. He said he took it to one car show, it won a prize, and that was enough. The car was truly a beauty.
Sturgeon Bay has a fabulous farmers' market. They had just lovely vegetables. Along the street where the farmers' market is set up a person has a model train running in their yard. And everyone was drawn to it, as were we.
We walked around a local natural area called Crossroads at Big Creek. We went between rain showers. The dampness gave the area a special beauty, especially the wildflowers.
I really like tree fungus.
We saw evidence of what I think is gypsy moth damage.
