The Sunken Gardens started out as a stone quarry, but after it was abandoned and became an eyesore, the city purchased the property in 1924. Later a group of members of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce, headed by E.M. Wasmuth, acquired the quarry and began to beautify it into its original beauty. The group dedicated it to the city in 1929.
We had the opportunity to talk to the director of the parks department. He told of the challenges of keeping a sunken garden from flooding. Amazing what can be made from an abandoned limestone mine.
Adjacent to the sunken garden is Memorial Park.
There were also some interesting people of the area.
Forks of the Wabash
The park contains several historic buildings, trails, and remnants of the Wabash and Erie Canal. The location was the signing location of the historic Treaty at the Forks of the Wabash in 1838.
Oh, yeah, Dan Quayle's Learning Center is located in Huntington.
