Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge - January 17

rvtramm75

Near Alamo, Santa Ana covers over 2000 acres along the banks of the Rio Grande and was established in 1943 for migratory birds. The Visitor Center at the park is currently closed, undergoing a major renovation. However, the trails through the park are still open.

As we walked toward the trailhead, we were greeted by a border patrol officer, who nodded in our direction. Continuing along the trail, we met two more officers. Yes, we are close to the border.

We saw some wildlife if you call lizards and butterflies wildlife.

There was also the nutria and the javelina.

There were two observation towers, from which you could easily see Mexico. The stairs, after a significant walk around the park, did pose a challenge.

The piece of equipment must be some sort of amphibious device to clear reeds.

We saw fields of cabbage and harvest was in swing. I have never seen this in real life; what an operation.
