Our next adventure was exploring San Felipe De Austin State Historic Site. Commemorating the location where, in 1823, Stephen F. Austin established a headquarters for his colony in Mexican Texas, San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site and new museum share the stories of early settlers in this region. The Museum, which opened in 2018, sits on the actual location of the original town of San Felipe De Austin. The town was burned during the Runaway Scrape of 1836. The Texas colonists were fleeing from Santa Anna’s troops and didn’t want to leave anything of value to the troops. Across FM 1458 from the Historic Site and Museum, is the original site which includes Historic Markers, a granite obelisk, and statue of Stephen F. Austin.
