We have stayed at this park a number of times and this will be our last. The owners are "gifting" the park to their son, who has plans to turn the park and adjacent areas into a hunting camp. Seems a waste, but times change.
We were only here for a week and we had a few places in Superior and Duluth that we enjoy seeing.
Erickson Park
Duluth is the northern end of I-35. Imagine a garden built over busy I-35, filled with roses and all sorts of plants. The park is dedicated to the Norwegian explorer, Leif Erickson. From the park, there are panoramic views of Lake Superior, the harbors, and the lift-bridge. One time when we were here, we saw a wedding party at the gazebo. I imagine quite a few wedding take place in the lovely park.
Enger Tower
The tower, built to honor a successful, immigrant businessman who had made significant donations to the City of Duluth, provides astounding views of Duluth and the harbors. The tower and the park were crowded the day we were there.
In the bottom picture, you can see the Duluth Lift Bridge and cargo ships anchored in the harbor.
Wisconsin Point
As you can imagine, with the traffic going through the harbors, lighthouses are very important. The cargo ships that come into the harbors are massive. Things moving in and out of the harbor include iron ore, coal, aggregate stone, grain, cement, salt, and general cargo. At Wisconsin Point, there are remnants of two houses, probably homes of the lighthouse keepers. There are also remnants of previous moorings.
The waters in the harbor are tinged red with the local iron ore. As you look out onto Lake Superior, you can see where the waters become blue.
I always look at those wonderful brass markers that show you exactly where you are. The University of Wisconsin was performing some sort of research the day we were there.
Pattison State Park – Big Manitou Falls
The tallest falls in Wisconsin is Big Manitou. There is also a Little Manitou, which is significantly smaller. This trip, we enjoyed the walk to Big Manitou and declined the walk to Little Manitou.
Barker Island
Barker Island is a strip of land connected to Superior with a small bridge. Out on the island lies a beached, camel-back boat, park, and a large marina. There is also a hotel/conference center.
The wind off Lake Superior was very cool for our walk. Here we are, near mid-August, and the wildflowers along Lake Superior are blooming. The impressive statue honors the many seamen who traveled through the harbors of Duluth and Superior.
