Built in 1886, Mingus Mill was once the largest mill in the Smokys. Powered by a turbine turned by water from a 400-foot flume, the second floor contained the "smut" machine that separated the grain from the debris and the "bolting" machine to separate the grades of flour. The miller usually kept 1/8 of the grain brought for milling to cover costs.
