Pictured Rock National Lakeshore
Mother Nature is the best artist and sculptor. Add in iron ore, copper ore, sandstone, and the wave action of Gitchee Goumee (Lake Superior), and you have beautiful landscapes and seascapes.
We took the 2 1/2 hour cruise, captained by a "captain" who travels from Florida to Michigan to "captain" the cruises on Lake Superior.
I know I've said this before, but once again, the weather was absolutely gorgeous.
Grand Isle sits just outside of the bay in Lake Superior. There is private ownership on the island but no utilities or water. What looks like a church was actually an old lighthouse which last housed a lighthouse keeper, his wife, and their thirteen children.
And, last but not least, we spotted an eagle.
Superior Dome, Marquette, Michigan
We have noticed this interesting building many times and wondered about it. When we took the tour of the Lighthouse, the tour guide suggested we go by and visit the Dome. We did.
Built in 1991, the Superior Dome is on the campus of Northern Michigan University. The
With 5.1 acres under its roof and constructed of 781 Douglas Fir beams and 108.5 miles of fir decking, the Dome is listed as the fifth-largest dome structure in the world and the largest wooden dome structure. The floor of the dome has a retractable artificial turf carpet that can accommodate football, soccer, and field hockey. Under the carpet is a synthetic playing surface with three basketball/volleyball courts and a 200-meter track.
And, the Superior Dome is also the home of a Guinness World Record for the tallest trophy.
Marquette Statue
On our last walk along Lake Superior, we again walked to the old ore dock and were still just amazed at the construction. We also walked up to the statue of Father Jacques Marquette, the namesake of the town. Marquette was quite an explorer. After his time in the Great Lakes, he and Louis Jollett explored the Mississippi River to the Arkansas River.
And, after a long walk, dodging a variety of bicycles, we decided gelato was the best answer.
