On a slow day, we stayed around Harlingen and visited the Iwo Jima memorial. Thanks to a couple of coincidences, the mold used for the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington, D. C. was assembled and is displayed here in Harlingen. First, the person closest to the ground, holding the flagpole, was a young man from nearby Weslaco, Harlen Block. The sculptor of the model gave it to the local military school, the Marine Military Academy to inspire the cadets. And finally, the fairly constant temperature and humidity in Harlingen were ideal for the preservation of the molding-plaster figures.
Our friends, Nancy and Ron, were leaving for Choke Canyon in the morning and we felt the need to celebrate the beautiful weather, the happy hours, and our fun times together.
