Goliad State Park - February 27

rvtramm75

The sun magically appeared this afternoon and we drove about 10 miles east of Goliad to the Fannin Battleground Historic Site. Leo did a POTA and I walked the park.

The area was first created in 1913 and has existed in various forms since. There were very ambitious plans that were never completed. What remains is an obelisk, a pavilion, and a small interpretative area.

A distinctive mark at the battle site is a "gin horsepower screw" that marks an entrenchment of the battle site. A survivor pointed out the spot and rocks were piled in the area. Later, the landowner, Sol Parks, placed the screw at the site. For years, it was the only marker of the area.

Also in Fannin, is McMillan's "World Famous" Bar-B-Q. This is the second Texas Monthly Top 50 barbecue place we tried on this trip. The first was Butter's in Mathis. I wish I could be very complementary to both. BUT, neither was impressive to us.

However, McMillan's had a most interesting interior. The walls are literally plastered with dollar bills.

To complete the Fannin experience, we went to the Fannin Memorial Monument where Fannin and his men were buried.

Our first spring flowers.
