Estero, near Weslaco, is always a good place to walk. Plus, at long last, we saw the alligator at Alligator Pond. Well, we sort of saw the alligator. People were telling us where to look, but I was looking in the water, not the shore. However, when I looked at the pictures, there was the alligator.
One of the most interesting birds at Estero is the pauraque. I've posted pictures of it before, but this time, I was able to get the entire bird in a photo. They are nocturnal hunters, kin to the nighthawks we see in North Texas. I have never seen one with its eyes open. This bird sat there and was the object of a number of amateur photographers.
