Brussels, WI - Part Three

rvtramm75

We drove to Forestville because that's where Cherry De-Lite is. When you see the pie, you will know why. Like most markets in the area, they had everything cherry you could think of. The pie, made in their own bakery, was a delight; great crust and tart cherry filling.

We stopped at the park in Forestville and did some birdwatching. We had never seen anything like the overflows at the dam.

And we saw cedar wax wings, green heron, a spotted sandpiper, and geese.

While we were admiring the weather and the sky, we had a passing visit by a bald eagle. We had seen others in the area and this is our only picture.

We attended two kite festivals, one in Algoma and the other at Two Rivers. The smaller festival at Two Rivers suffered from a distinct lack of wind but they did have some interesting balloons. We toured around the town, found a small lighthouse and an abandoned, rotating railroad bridge.

Algoma, the location of the other kite festival, had an excellent kite day with sustained winds, lots of sun, and a beach location. Algoma sits on the Lake Michigan side of the peninsula. There was even a bubble lady!

Like every good festival, they had a fun kid activity. The kids got to decorate their own kite necklaces.

Have you ever seen four people fly four kites while standing side by side and not run into each other or collide the kites? This was amazing.

We had a good time.

We went to Algoma a number of times. It is a neat, lakeside town with a long beach and a good boardwalk, plus, yes, it too, has a lighthouse. I thought the "little lighthouse library" was so neat!

Algoma calls itself the sport fishing charter capital of Wisconsin and looking at the boats, I believe it.

This point at the harbor is called Christmas Tree Point. Many of the captains and crews of the 52 schooners who transported Christmas trees to Chicago and Milwaukee lived in Algoma. One of the schooners, the Lady Ellen, went down between the two bridges across the Anhapee River in Algoma.

We saw a number of monarchs beginning their trip south, what we think is a mink slinking along the breaker, a variety of seabirds, and a very large swan.

We have found our new lake house! Not really, that is the Algoma Visitor Center. The first evidence of the changing season appeared. More photos are coming!

We have always wanted to go to Alaska. Somehow, Alaska, Wisconsin was not what I imagined.

One more Algoma story, this one sort of strange. Algoma is one of the stops on a "Cruise the Great Lakes" tour by Viking Cruises. We wanted to see the big ship and the tenders bringing guests to the shore. Quite a sight, the cruise ship sitting out in the lake and the tender boats bringing in the tourists. Scroll through the pictures below.

Now, the strange part. We noticed a number of police in the area and saw what looked like vehicles from a funeral home. I thought they might be using the large-capacity vehicles for tourists. No, they were there for what you think. As we sat watching the ship, an ambulance arrived. We watched as the tourists left the tender and then, they brought out gurney out of the tender. Sadly, someone had died on the boat. I can't imagine riding on the tender with the body.
