In 2004, Bentsen, which is bordered by the Rio Grande, became a world birding center. The over 600-acre park was formed in 1962 from a gift from the Bentsen family.
Like most of the parks, we were greeted by Border Patrol. We were also greeted with a partial border wall that if completed would separate the visitor center from the park. How that will work, I don't know.
We walked the park, looking for birds. Here as with other spots, the birding has not been the best. We did, however, while riding the trolley around the park, hear a very interesting conversation. A single woman, who called herself a hiker, not a birder, described her next few weeks and months of hiking activities. She was headed to Big Bend, then some hike around Austin, and then back to the Appalachian Trail. She was also primitive camping in Bentsen. A far tougher woman than I.
