The Augusta Canal, completed in 1847, was constructed along the what was the west side of Augusta. Industries along the canal included textiles, flour mills, foundries, and locomotives. The canal was of three levels along with locks and dams.
There are now a series of hiking and biking trails along the canal.
Constructed along the Augusta Canal in 1862, the Confederate Powder Works stretched along two miles of the Augusta Canal. Selected because of its location and transportation both canal and rail, the powder works produced over three million pounds of gunpowder from 1862 to 1865.
The tall smokestack is the only remaining part of the powder works. The expansion of the canal in the 1870s destroyed the powder works. Some of the brick in the other surrounding brick buildings, textile mills, were from the powder works.
