Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest remnants of coastal prairie habitat remaining in southeast Texas. In 1968, Attwater Prairie Chicken Preserve was designated as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service. We did the driving tour around the Refuge, which is also a working ranch. Our wildlife views didn’t include the Prairie Chicken, but we did see buzzards, a hawk, grebes, and some contented cattle. I can imagine this is a dark place at night and the sounds would be amazing.
Also, during our time at Stephen F. Austin State Park, we traveled to Lake Jackson to visit with family, and Leo’s son came out to the park from Houston for a visit.
